Design Tips: Islands in the Kitchen (and everywhere else)

Log home owners typically opt for the casual lifestyle when it comes to the great room or family space.  Kitchens have become multi-use rooms, often connected to family rooms and eating areas, while traditional living and dining rooms are going the way of the smoking parlor.

This trend typically includes the multi-functional island.  The inclusion of an island in the kitchen serves several purposes.  Visually, it separates the kitchen from the living area while bridging the two living spaces.  Extra seating, storage and work space are additional benefits.

As a seating area, they're great for cooks who like to have guests chat with them while they're preparing a meal, perfect for moms who want to keep an eye on their children's' homework while making dinner, and a clever way for chefs who like to cook alone to separate their workspace from the rest of the kitchen area.

When planning for your island always leave a minimum of 36" space between it and neighboring cabinetry or appliances.  Consider that refrigerator door's swing or the ability to retrieve pots and pans from the cabinet below.  42" is a safe allowance to plan with.  The island needs to be within a few steps of other critical zones of the kitchen.  Remember to include adequate lighting to ensure that your island has maximum functional appeal.

It can house a cook top, extra or primary sink, the microwave - what ever your needs or desires, you can adapt your kitchen to suit your personal life style.

As the island has evolved over the years it has often become much more than a simple rectangle.  It can be multi-leveled, symmetrical or slightly askew.  Creative use of contrasting counter tops, shapes and coverings on the living area or back side of the island enable the home owner to personalize the island and use it as a focal point, if desired.
